Julie Ann Hoffmann

September 3, 1936 — May 6, 2017

Julie Anne Hoffmann, 80 years old, passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Borgess Medical Center. She was born on September 3, 1936 to John and Esther (Whelan) Weisheit, at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI. Julie possessed a tenacious spirit and an inquiring mind; traits which served her well in diverse pursuits, including: genealogical research into her Irish-German roots, her study of Gaelic, and her lifelong appreciation and knowledge of Jazz. She combined discerning insight with a straightforward and honest demeanor which won the trust and hearts of many persons, who even now are being changed by her example of constant nurturing love and devotion to family. Her willingness to sacrifice of herself to help others will never be forgotten. After graduating from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1954, she worked briefly for Upjohn Pharmaceuticals and then spent time living in New York City, Louisiana, and Iowa before taking a job with the US Veteran's Administration, and eventually returning to Kalamazoo - where she became a staple of the local running scene. Julie was widely recognized for her talent at middle and long distance races, and competed in the Detroit and New York City Marathons as well as many other events. She won her division in numerous races and was ranked 1st or 2nd nationally in her age-group on several occasions throughout her running career. In 1980, she met fellow Kalamazoo runner, Randall Hoffmann, with whom she was united in marriage on May 28, 1981. They have shared deep love and companionship throughout their marriage, and Randy, who survives her, will forever cherish these memories. Also surviving are her daughter, Kathleen (John) Curran-Lavendoski of Bainbridge Island, WA; twin grandchildren, Esther Rose Lavendoski and Stephen Thomas Lavendoski; her sister, Barbara Weisheit-Hughes of Kalamazoo; niece, Elizabeth Whelan-Hughes; as well as many cousins on both sides of her family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am Thursday, May 11, 2017 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Julie's name to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research Arrangements by Parchment Redmond Funeral Home, 2300 East "G" Ave. Parchment, MI 49004 (269) 349-7735. www.redmondfuneralhomes.net
