Jan Jozef van den Hombergh

February 19, 1923 — November 27, 2020

Jan, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Friday, November 27, 2020, from COVID-19. He was born February 19, 1923, in Sevenum, the Netherlands, to Jozefus and Elisabeth (Baeten) van den Hombergh. He was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church and worked as a mechanic at Engel Volkswagen and later as a millwright at Georgia Pacific before retiring. Jan had excellent mechanical skills and could build and repair almost anything. He had a very inventive mind when it came to tackling projects around our family home. He also enjoyed his time as a volunteer at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo. On September 19, 1961, in Geysteren, the Netherlands, Jan was united in marriage to the former Maria Josephine Kunen, who survives. Also surviving are: four sons, John (Sherri), Tony (Beth), Robert, and Peter van den Hombergh; sister, Gertrudis Pennings of the Netherlands; five grandchildren, Max, Jacob, Jackie, Joseph, and Sidney van den Hombergh; and several nieces & nephews in the United States and the Netherlands. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. A private family visitation was held and a Mass of Christian Burial has been celebrated. The family thanks the staff at Plainwell Pines Nursing Home for providing excellent care for Jan during the past two years. The family also thanks Father Paul Redmond for performing the Sacrament of the Sick under difficult circumstances. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
