Martha May Meinzinger

March 27, 1934 — September 19, 2023

Kalamazoo

Mrs. Martha (Marty) Meinzinger went home to be with the Lord on September 19, 2023. She is survived by her three daughters Mary (David Handelsman) Urisko, Annie (Mike) Fassler, Amy (Matt) Wolff; her grandchildren, Richard (Loretta Scott) Urisko, Meghan Urisko, Caitlin Urisko, Michael Mehall, Patrick Mehall; her great grandchildren Kaede Urisko, Clark Urisko; her sister, Mary Higgins, her sister-in-law, Gayle (Roy) Gutknecht and several nieces and nephews. There was nothing more important to Marty than her family and her incredible love for them. Marty’s legacy of unfailing love and kindness had no end.  Marty was born on March 27, 1934, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She was the daughter of Roy and Dororthy (Gidner) Mesick. She was cheerleader and homecoming queen at Kalamazoo Central High School. Marty held a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Western Michigan University, where she met the love of her life, Jerry Meinzinger. They spent the first year of their marriage living in Germany while Jerry finished his military service in the U.S. Army, which engendered in them a love of travel in Europe. They were married for 63 years before Jerry’s passing in September 2018. Marty retired from The Upjohn Company after more than 25 years of employment where she worked diligently researching the side effects of drugs. She was a brilliant woman and the team she worked on helped get ibuprofen FDA approved, for which she won an award from her employer. Also, due to Marty’s knowledge and quick thinking on a day when it was her turn to answer calls regarding drug reactions, a life was saved.  Marty was very active in the Kalamazoo Community. She volunteered as a board member and/or committee member for many of Kalamazoo’s nonprofit organizations including the Junior League, Ministry of Community, Hospitality House, Western Michigan University Foundation, and Western Michigan University Gary Fund, and many more.  Marty’s love of life and love for others was evident to all who knew her. She will be truly missed. A memorial service to celebrate Marty’s life will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Stetson Chapel on Kalamazoo College’s campus, followed by a luncheon at Hicks Banquet Hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to Bronson Commons, The Gospel Mission, or the Alzheimers Association.
