Richard Jackson Garrison

Mr. Richard "Spanky" Garrison of Prairieville, MI, passed away suddenly on April 12, 2023 at home. Spanky was born in Kalamazoo on October 19, 1955 the son of Samuel Garrison and Alice (Velez) Rabbers. He graduated from Parchment 

High School in 1975, during his High school years, he was a baseball and football standout.

Rick retired after 25 years from the City of Kalamazoo as a Firefighter / Police officer.

 He continued on as the Fire Chief at the Kalamazoo airport and Prairieville Fire department. Rick spent many years working to build the Prairieville department touching many lives

He had many hobbies. Back in the day he repaired fishing reels and was a painter as a side business. He loved fishing and hunting.  He loved hanging out with his many friends in his kitchen. Rick was very social. He did not know a stranger. Rick could talk to anyone.  He could walk in a room and have everyone laughing.  He was the life of the party 

Most of all, Rick loved his grandsons. He was passing down his passions to them. Rick was looking forward to taking them fishing, hunting and gardening.  There was nothing he would not do for them

He was a member of the F.O.P. and a Deer Processor and owned Firehouse Catering. He cooked for many over the years. Cooking was Rick’s way of spreading love and happiness

He was preceded in death by his father.

Richard is survived by his wife Brenda whom he married August 20, 1977.  Rick and Brenda have 2 daughters, Michelle (Jeff) Haeger, Jacqueline (Jeff Weller) Garrison all of Kalamazoo.

3 grandsons:  Jackson Haeger, Cyrus and Beau Garrison, 5 siblings: Ava Garrison of FL, Lou (Ellen) Garrison of Kalamazoo,MI, Sam (Kris) Garrison of TN, Lola (Phil) Wagner of FL, Dave (Denise) Garrison of Kalamazoo, MI.  Along with several nieces and nephews.

Friends & Family will be received April 28, 2023 at Parchment Redmond Funeral Home in Parchment, MI from 4 until 7pm. A Celebration of Life will be April 29, 2023 at the Fraternal Order of Police at 1721 Riverview Dr. Kalamazoo, MI 49004 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.  There will be a procession prior to the Celebration of Life, with multiple places to watch along the route.  The passing of the ashes from Prairieville Fire Department to Kalamazoo Fire Department will be at 10:00 AM.  The procession will leave at 11:00 AM from the Kalamazoo Township Police Department, and be until 12:00 PM back at the Faternal Order of Police.

Memorial donations can be made to Brenda. These donations will be used for Rick’s Grandsons, Jackson, Cyrus and Beau, to do all the things that Grandpa had planned to do with them. Rick was looking forward to taking them fishing, hunting and playing baseball.  This is a way for Grandpa to still be a part of this.
